Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week or two, you would have seen the #idibalachallenge or the #malwedhechallenge.

Whatever you choose to call it, it’s the dance craze that has swept the nation off its feet, quite literally, and it’s all because of the proverbial Prince Charming known as King Monada.

He is the man behind the song that’s sparked the challenge that’s gone viral not just in South Africa, but other parts of the world too, thanks to the power of social media.

Here are five things to know about King Monada, who’s been dubbed the reigning “King of December 2018:

1. He’s also the man behind the hit song Ska Bhora Moreki

This song ruled the airwaves around this time in 2016. It hit just the right spot with partygoers who related to what was being preached. Basically, the song tells anyone who doesn’t have money not to annoy the person who is buying all the booze and settling the tab for the night.

2. He’s a family man

The 26-year-old is all about family. His Instagram is filled with images of either his mother or his son – mixed in between other posts showing his hectic performance schedule.

3. He loves his language

Check his Instagram and you’ll see that his posts are written in his mother-tongue known as Selobedu, which is regarded, according to salanguages.com, as a dialect of Northern Sotho. His interview with 24-hour news channel eNCA was conducted in his home language.

4. His dance craze made national headines

EWN: This year, the December festive season capital is Limpopo as King Monada’s ‘Idibala’ takes over South Africa and the rest of the world.

Idibala is a catchy tune about a man warning his lover that if she leaves him, he will faint.

For those of you in the dark about what all the lyrics mean, here’s a breakdown.

The song is accompanied by a dance where people pretend that they’re fainting. But, you better be careful because the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has issued a warning asking people not to do the challenge while driving as it poses risks to road users.

The song has gotten the public’s stamp of approval as the festive season anthem, a title that has traditionally been held by Durban’s house/gqom’ scene.

Even popular Durban-based DJ Tira has conceded defeat that this year, Monada has run away with the festive.

5. His real name is Khutso Steven Kgale

While he may be known by his stage name, he was born Khutso Steven Kgale. He lives in Bolobedu in Limpopo and on occasion on social media refers to himself as King of Limpopo. However, due to his growing fame and penchant for releasing hit songs close to the festive season. he has been given the title King of December and even Minister of Entertainment by the Twitterverse.
