The trick to managing your body weight, is a good workout

Even the skinniest of guys can bulk up and even the fattest person and can tone up

Hello Brawlers and Brawlettes hope I find you well. I have been tracking your workouts and the discipline, motivation, focus and most of your workouts are goal oriented, that is quite impressive. Have you ever thought about your body type? What is your answer? … if not, make and effort to find out, what is your body type.

This week I will embark to assist you on what seems to be the hardest resolution to keep fit and staying health.

Whether or not you do it from home or by going to a gym your goals can be achieved and if you fail here and there (which will happen) pick yourself up, dust yourself off and try again. But first you need to understand your body and how it relates to different foods and different exercises.

This week’s topic will give you a better understanding on the various body types. In the following weeks I will continue to give insight as to how your body type is affected by the types of foods you eat as well as the different exercises for a particular body type.

Have you ever wondered why a diet works so well for your friend, but not for you? Rather than following one fad diet after another hoping it will work, why not discover your body type and end your search for the perfect diet. Understanding your body type is a significant guidepost that helps you along your journey.

Like astrology, it is present at birth and stays with you your entire life.

Body typing identifies your characteristic traits

Knowing your strengths and areas of weakness provides a road map, points you in the right direction and allows you to make sure you are staying on course. Body typing is another way of reading the body to gain insight into your uniqueness. It explains the differences and similarities between people.

Physically, body typing identifies which and the time of day to eat to best support your body. It simplifies the search for your optimal diet, exercise program and shows you how to identify potential health problems.

Psychologically, body typing identifies your characteristic traits, what motivates you to do what you do, and identifies your strengths as well as how to best express them.

Your body type is determined by your dominant gland, organ or system. This is the gland (like thyroid), organ (like heart) or system (like blood) that is the strongest.

For the sake of simplicity, they will all be grouped together and referred to as the dominant gland. It is this dominant gland that is responsible for the differences we see between individuals, such as weight gain patterns, physical characteristics, food preferences, the types of food you crave when your energy is low, and basic personality differences. Basic personality differences include whether your dominant sense is mental or emotional.

We all have both senses, but when we are backed into a corner and push comes to shove, some of us rely more heavily on our minds, while the rest of us rely on our feelings.

Gynaeoid; Android; Thyroid and Lymphatic Gynaeoid bodies

The main difference between men and women is in their weight gain patterns. Women gain weight in one of three areas: upper body, lower body or all over. Men gain weight in their abdomen and around the waist. In my previous article I also explained the difference of weight gain in certain areas and the risks.

Women fall into one of four categories: Gynaeoid; Android; Thyroid and Lymphatic Gynaeoid body means curvaceous hips with a tapered, small waist. They have small to medium shoulders and the breasts vary in size. The hips and thighs curve outwards and weight gain occurs only below the waistline.

Gynaeoid women tend to have a predominance of the female hormone oestrogen, (oestrogen dominance) which targets the uterine region, the hips, thighs and breasts. Excessive oestrogens promote fat deposition around the lower parts of the
body as well as cellulite.  If weight loss is attempted by following a very low fat low calorie diet, there is a reduction from the breasts, shoulders and arms etc., but alas not from the thighs and buttocks.

Android body types are characterised by broad shoulders, a large rib cage and strong shapely muscular limbs. Android body types are somewhat straight up and down with a narrow pelvis and hips that do not curve outwards. The waistline is not accentuated.

Android women have an anabolic metabolism, which leads to a body building tendency, so strength, both physical and mental, are prominent characteristics. Many good athletes are Android shaped. Weight gain occurs in the upper part of the body and on the front of the abdomen, so that an apple-shape may develop.

Thyroid body types are characterized by relatively long limbs with fine, narrow bones. They often become dancers and models. Thyroid women consume stimulants in excess.

These include; caffeine, nicotine, diet pills etc. A high metabolic rate allows them to eat generously with little or no weight gain. Of all the body types, Thyroid women are least likely to develop cellulite, but if it does occur, it will be on the buttocks and backs of the thighs.

Weight gain occurs over the entire body in Lymphatic women, which gives them a ‘cuddly baby doll appearance’. Weight gain occurs very easily for Lymphatic women, as the metabolic rate is very slow, accompanied by a dysfunctional lymphatic system.


Cellulite is common in this body type with deposits of fat swollen with lymphatic fluid, giving a dimpled appearance on thick puffy limbs. For Lymphatic women exercise is not the favourite activity. Guidance by a nutritionist is the best way forward to reduce obesity and cellulite, by replacing it with nourishment and vitality. Excellent and long lasting results are then achievable.

Men fall into one of these three categories but are more likely to be a combination of two categories: Ectomorph ; Mesomorph and Endomorph.

An ectomorph is a typical skinny guy. They have a light build with small  joints and lean muscle, long thin limbs with stringy muscles. Shoulders tend to be thin with little Ectomorphs find it very hard to gain weight. They have a fast metabolism which burns up calories very quickly.

They need a huge amount of calories in order to gain weight.

A mesomorph has a large bone structure, large muscles and a naturally athletic physique. Mesomorphs are the best body type for bodybuilding. They find it quite easy to gain and lose weight. They are naturally strong which is the perfect platform for building muscle.

The mesomorph body type responds the best to weight training. Gains are usually seen very quickly, especially for beginners. The downside to mesomorphs is they gain fat more easily than ectomorphs. This means they must watch their calorie intake.

The endomorph body type is solid and generally soft. Endomorphs gain fat very easily. Endo’s are usually of a shorter build with thick arms and legs.

Combination of body types

Muscles are strong, especially the upper legs. Endomorphs find they are naturally strong in leg exercises like the squat. When it comes to training endomorphs find it very easy to gain weight. Unfortunately, a large portion of this weight is fat not muscle.

These body types are not set in stone. In fact, most guys have a combination of two body types. These combinations are either ectomorph/mesomorph or mesomorph/endomorph. It is not uncommon to find a pure mesomorph that gains weight like an endomorph for example.

Given the information above you should be able to identify your body type. This will allow you optimize your diet and training to suit your body type. One final point I want to mention is that no matter what your body type you can build a big, ripped, muscular physique.

Even the skinniest of guys can bulk up and even the fattest person and can tone up. Yes, it is harder but if you are willing to put in the hard work it can be done! To be continued next week.
